What is inside

  • Page 1, the shape of the poem. All 24 books by word count, colored by phase, and the grid of who knows Odysseus is home from Book XIII to Book XXIV.
  • Page 2, the ledgers. The nine recognition scenes with a line from each, Homer’s count of the 108 suitors by island, and the 14 named suitors killed in Book XXII with the man who killed each.

Who it is for

Made for teaching the second half of the Odyssey, for book clubs reading it in translation, and for anyone who wants the recognition scenes in order. Quotes are from Butcher and Lang; the facts hold in any translation.

Where the numbers come from

The Odyssey, translated by S. H. Butcher and A. Lang (1879), public domain, via Project Gutenberg (eBook #1728). Every number on the handout is computed from the The Odyssey character map and the text itself, the same way the data story is, so the handout, the story and the map can never disagree. Select any figure on the interactive map to see the passage behind a line.

Free to print and copy for your own class, book club or desk. Please do not resell it or post the file elsewhere; share this page instead.

Constellate turns any text into an interactive map of its characters, and every claim on the map carries a short quote from the text itself.
