What is inside

  • Page 1, the charts. One square per named killing in each of the 24 books, colored by who died; the twelve figures with the most named kills; and the dead split by side.
  • Page 2, the ledger. All 166 named killings in the order the poem tells them, with the book and the killer, in three columns.

Who it is for

Made for classroom reading of the Iliad, book clubs, and anyone who has lost track of the dead by Book XI. It pairs with the Lang, Leaf and Myers translation and works with any other.

Where the numbers come from

The Iliad, translated by Andrew Lang, Walter Leaf and Ernest Myers (1883), public domain, via Project Gutenberg (eBook #3059). Every number on the handout is computed from the The Iliad character map and the text itself, the same way the data story is, so the handout, the story and the map can never disagree. Select any figure on the interactive map to see the passage behind a line.

Free to print and copy for your own class, book club or desk. Please do not resell it or post the file elsewhere; share this page instead.

Constellate turns any text into an interactive map of its characters, and every claim on the map carries a short quote from the text itself.
