Pierre arrives late to the Rostóvs' name-day dinner and sits awkwardly, answering questions in monosyllables while people gossip about his prank with a bear and policeman. He eats and drinks heartily, is befriended by Borís, dances with Natásha, and is drawn into political conversation.
